While some of us were relaxing and soaking up the sun this summer, Michele Vaca and her Summer ESL students were hard at work developing English skills and making superb connections! Bringing her history background into her class, Mrs. Vaca introduced her students to Facing the Lion, a memoir written by Holocaust survivor, Mrs. Simone Liebster. The students had a video chat via Skype with the author, who lives in France. When asked if she has forgiven the Nazis, Mrs. Liebster replied, “I never hold a grudge because you never know what influences someone may have that causes them to act in this way.” The class was also quite inspired by a piece of advice the author passed along: “Whenever you do something, if the outcome does not bring love, don’t do it.”
